Feasibility study for ultra-low-x measurements in p+O collisions using the ATLAS ZDC and LHCf detector to explore the saturation regime at the LHC
#

Brief description: The 2025 p+O data-taking campaign at 9.62 TeV featured a unique forward detector setup in the proton-going direction at ATLAS. The LHCf detector and the ATLAS Zero Degree Calorimeter (ZDC) were both installed and operated with joint readout, providing unique capabilities for detecting neutral particles in proton–nucleus collisions at the LHC.

The candidate will carry out Monte Carlo (MC) feasibility studies for a novel measurement using neutral pions (π⁰) measured by LHCf as a proxy for a very forward jet in dijet pairs. The study will investigate the ultra-low-x region in the oxygen nucleus, exploring the potential to probe the saturation regime at the LHC.

Preferred skillset for interested candidates: Programming experience in C++ or Python. Experience with ROOT is particularly welcome.

Timeline: No deadline.
